18th day of hunger strike: More prisoners join mass hunger strike - 4.  5. 2017 - Palestinian political prisoners entered 18th day of hunger strike, the day that standing may become difficult or even impossible. On 3 May 2017, significant Palestinian political leaders declared they will be joining the mass hunger strike. A joint press conference held in Ramallah on the same day declared that imprisoned Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) General Secretary Ahmad Sa’adat will join the strike along with dozens of leaders from several Palestinian political factions such as Nael Barghouthi, Hassan Salameh, Ahed Abu Ghoulmeh, Abbas al-Sayed, Ziad Bseiso, Basem al-Khandakji, Mohammed al-Malah, Tamim Salem, Mahmoud Issa, and Said al-Tubasi.

Over 1500 Palestinian political prisoners and detainees held in Israeli prisons and detention centers began an open hunger strike on 17 April 2017. The call for a hunger strike came as a result of Israeli’s policies and >>>

Message from Marwan Barghouti, Fatah Central Committee Member, Parliamentarian and Political Prisoner, to Thousands of Palestinian Protestors Yesterday at Nelson Mandela Square in Ramallah. - Delivered by his Wife, Adv. Fadwa Barghouti.

If my letter reaches you that would mean the hunger strike is ongoing and Israel has decided to respond it through incitement, solitary confinement of hunger strikers and repression, with the illusion that this will make us abandon our sacred struggle and our legitimate demands. The Palestinian prisoners have faith that their people will not let them down and will meet loyalty with loyalty and will support the prisoners and their families who have endured sacrifice and hardship and suffering.

I am addressing you from solitary confinement, among thousands of prisoners and on their behalf, and among hundreds of prisoners who have decided to launch this hunger strike for freedom and dignity that will continue till their legitimate demands are met.

Israel can not silence us, nor isolate us, nor break us. Our will is solid and unshaken, and the occupation tested it time and time again and was unable to subdue or subjugate us and we continued to rebel against our captivity and attempts to humiliate us.

This hunger strike aims to confront the ongoing and escalating unjust Israeli occupation policies against prisoners and their loved ones. We stress our determination to undertake this struggle whatever the cost, and we have no doubt that the Palestinian prisoners will be steadfast and prevail. Prisoners are proud to be part of this nation and its infinite resilience and they are proud to endure for our country, convinced that victory is ineluctable.

The Israeli colonial occupation is attempting through daily arrest which has affected thousands of Palestinians annually throughout the duration of the occupation to exhaust and intimidate our people and destroy its ability to struggle against the occupation. This occupation has violated our cities, villages, refugee camps, holy places and Jerusalem, and it arrests dozens of Palestinians daily and subject them to torture and ill treatment, including during interrogation, and falsely accuses them and adopts arbitrary decisions against them through their illegitimate courts, civilian and military, and conducts policies and actions that constitute grave breaches under international law and crimes for which those responsible must be held accountable. >>>

Mohammad Sabaaneh’s dangerous cartoons - Marguerite Dabaie - Palestinian culture is in itself a dangerous act, a reason to be caged. So suggests a cartoon in a new anthology of work by Mohammad Sabaaneh.

The panel shows a group of men and women in traditional dress dancing the folkloric dabke while shackled together. A checkpoint cuts through the line dance, and Israel’s wall stops them short.

Here, the message seems to be, even celebrations are fraught with obstacles brought on by the Israeli occupation.

White and Black: Political Cartoons from Palestine, published by Just World Books, offers a rare opportunity for English-language readers to become familiar with Sabaaneh’s stark black and white images, printed in newspapers across the Arab world.

These political cartoons are foremost a form of solidarity with ordinary Palestinians in their daily struggle for survival and ongoing battle for justice.

Most of the cartoons are saturated with action and iconography.

One features the Palestinian flag prominently in a number of ways. A woman sews a flag with a sewing machine, while a man removes the same flag from a flagpole. Another man wears the flag as a tie, and three men pull the flag into three separate strips below him. People hold flags in the background, a kite bearing the flag flies in the air, and a man cradles a child (perhaps dead) draped in the flag. >>>

The Trump opportunity’ — some Palestinians are optimistic about Abbas visit to White House (!) - Philip Weiss - Update. Today Donald Trump appeared with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the White House and Trump spoke vaguely about “peace,” while Abbas praised Trump’s “leadership” as the chance for a “historic peace treaty,” which would end “occupation.”

Trump said nothing critical of Israel, but blamed Palestinian leaders for inciting violence by children.

There’s such hatred. But hopefully there won’t be such hatred for very long…. We want to create peace between Israel and the Palestinians. We will get it done. We will be working so hard to get it done. It’s been a long time, but we will be working diligently. And I think there’s a very, very good chance, and I think you feel the same way.

Abbas on occupation:

Mr. President, it’s about time for Israel to end its occupation of our people and of our land after 50 years. We are the only remaining people in the world that still live under occupation. We are aspiring and want to achieve our freedom, our dignity, and our right to self-determination. And we also want for Israel to recognize the Palestinian state just as the Palestinian people recognize the state of Israel.

Mr. President, I affirm to you that we are raising our youth, our children, our grandchildren on a culture of peace.

Original post.

Last night an old friend told me that Donald Trump is at once so disruptive and so keen to make the ultimate deal that some Palestinians are looking to President Mahmoud Abbas’s visit to the White House as presenting real hope for a breakthrough in the 70 year impasse on the world’s promise to give self-determination to the Palestinian people. Yes I know this will strike many as laughable. But I am just passing along what some are saying.

That optimism is expressed foremost by Jibril Rajoub, a Fatah leader, in Newsweek: Let us not miss the Trump opportunity! >>>

Antrittsbesuch des Bundespräsidenten in Israel - Steinmeiers Strategie gegen den Eklat - Beim Gabriel-Besuch kam es zum Streit mit Premier Netanyahu. Nun will Bundespräsident Steinmeier neuen Ärger in Israel vermeiden.

IDF radio commander: Don't call it the West Bank - Edo Konrad - Yaron Deckel, who heads the third most popular radio station in Israel, orders his staff to refrain from using the term, saying it has been ‘adopted by the Palestinians and the Left.’

Yaron Deckel, who has served as the station commander since February 2012, sent a directive to his staff in which he said the decision was made since “West Bank” has been “adopted by Palestinians and the Left,” instead ordering them to use the word “territories” (“shtachim”) to describe the land beyond the Green Line.

Deckel is a veteran journalist who over the past five years has pushed the station — often viewed as left-leaning — to the right, including by canceling a number of shows belonging to left-wing hosts and hiring right-wingers. Earlier this year, Deckel fired Khen Elmaleh after she published a Facebook post expressing sympathy for Yacoub Abu al-Qi’an, who was accused by police of deliberately running over an officer in an alleged terrorist attack (al-Qi’an, it turns out, most likely did not carry out a premeditated attack, but was shot and killed by police nonetheless).

Deckel’s directive is not a new one. Army Radio management told ultra-Orthodox news outlet, Kikar HaShabbat, that Deckel was merely issuing a reminder to the staff after one broadcaster used the term “West Bank” on a show. “As part of his job as editor-in-chief, and as he requested throughout his tenure, the Army Radio commander >>>

Israelis celebrate 69 years, ignore occupation - Akiva Eldar - Al-Monitor - "It appears that the Israeli public prefers to see the half-full glass of a state founded 69 years ago that has flourished on the blood, sweat and tears of the Jewish people. It succeeds in ignoring the other half of the glass, the one poisoned with the blood, sweat and tears of another people." >>>

The Humanitarian Impact of Gaza’s Electricity and Fuel Crisis - Juli 2015 - OCHA - A fact sheet by OCHA oPt

Key Facts

An Israeli airstrike in June 2006 targeting the Gaza Power Plant (GPP) marked the start of an electricity crisis in the Gaza Strip, which is still ongoing.

Electricity demand in the Gaza Strip is estimated at 470 megawatts (MW), of which less than 45% is currently met.

Rolling blackouts of 12-16 hours per day are seen across Gaza with heavily populated areas being most impacted.

Due to severe fuel shortages, since July 2013 the GPP has been operating at approximately half of its capacity (60 out of 120 MW) or below, and has been forced to shut down on several occasions.

In addition to the GPP, Gaza depends on the purchase of electricity from Israel (120 MW) and Egypt (28 MW). Nearly 70% of households do not pay their electricity bills due to their inability to afford them or due to lack of enforcement.

Since November 2013, humanitarian agencies and donors have spent over US$ 11 million in emergency fuel support to critical service providers.

More than 70% of households in Gaza are being supplied with piped water for 6-8 hours only once every two to four days, due to insufficient power supply (WASH cluster).

Up to 90 million litres of partially treated sewage are being discharged into the Mediterranean Sea every day, partially due to electricity and fuel shortages (WASH cluster).

Waiting time for some types of elective surgery at Gaza’s largest hospital (Shifa) extending up to 18 months (WHO).

Gaza electricity Map, adapted from GEDCo. Click to enlarge.

The chronic electricity deficit affecting Gaza over the past nine years has disrupted the delivery of basic services and undermined already vulnerable livelihoods and living conditions. The situation has further deteriorated since June 2013, following the halt in the smuggling of Egyptian-subsidized fuel used to operate the GPP, via the illegal tunnels.
The functioning of the GPP has been significantly impaired over the past several years by additional factors. These include ongoing disputes between Palestinian authorities in Gaza and Ramallah over the funding of fuel for the GPP; the limited collection of mehr >>>

What does the future hold for non-Jews in the Jewish state? - Natasha Roth - A new book about Israel’s crusade against asylum seekers and undocumented workers strikes at an essential truth about the precarious status of non-Jews in a self-defined Jewish state.

In a small apartment in south Tel Aviv, a Filipina woman hides her Christmas tree in the hallway, away from the windows, fearing that were someone to spot it from outside she might be found out and wind up being deported. On the outskirts of a park in the same city, prospective employers size up a row of African asylum seekers, trying to determine who is the strongest and therefore who will be the best pick for a day’s cheap labor. In a church not far away, immigration agents burst in and detain an African man, despite his having a valid visa.

These picture postcards from Israel are scattered throughout Mya Guarnieri Jaradat’s new book, The Unchosen: The Lives of Israel’s New Others, published by Pluto Press. The book chronicles, through a blend of assiduous reporting and frank anecdotes, the country’s war on non-Jewish migrants, be they asylum seekers or foreign workers. Jaradat, who is also a blogger for +972, leads us around Israel and takes us in and out of the homes of her subjects, most of whom have congregated in south Tel Aviv — an area with which the author is clearly intimately familiar. Through their experiences, and Jaradat’s personal reflections, we learn about the toll that Israel’s crusade against undocumented workers and asylum seekers takes on its victims.
