Verehrter Lord Rothschild,

Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man - 02.11.2016

Also bleiben wir in Israel.“ Sie schweigt.

Hamas’ release of Fatah military wing leader raises speculation of deal - Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades leader Zaki al-Sakani was released from the Hamas government’s security prisons on Oct. 19. Sakani learned the news less than 24 hours before his release. The surprise move has prompted speculation about a potential agreement between Hamas and dismissed Fatah leader Mohammed Dahlan. - Mohammed Othman

Sakani was arrested by the Hamas government security services on Aug. 2, 2008, after sustaining abdominal injuries during armed clashes. The [Hamas] judiciary laid several charges against him, most importantly for forming terrorist groups, planning terrorist attacks, possessing and manufacturing explosives, and involvement in the Gaza beach explosion that killed five members of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades as well as a child on July 25, 2008. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, a term that was later on reduced to 10 years.

Sakani left for Cairo with a temporary passport 24 hours after his release, he told Al-Monitor over the phone. “I bid my nuclear family — my wife, children, mother, brothers and sisters — farewell at the family house a few hours before leaving the Gaza Strip. After that, I went straight to the Rafah crossing. The Gaza Interior Ministry prevented me from bidding my other relatives or neighbors farewell.”

He said that the Gaza Interior Ministry kept him from telling anyone about his release to avoid being welcomed by a crowd of friends and relatives, and he could just see his nuclear family.

Sakani pointed out that he will receive treatment in Egypt for complications caused by his severe injury during his arrest and recover there. Then, he will travel to Saudi Arabia to perform umrah. He continued, “After that, I will try to return to the Gaza Strip, because nothing will stop me from going back to my hometown. On my return, there will be communication between Hamas' political bureau and me to guarantee my freedom and ensure that I will not be arrested by Hamas.” >>>

In Muhammad Dahlan’s Ascent, a Proxy Battle for Legitimacy - ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Muhammad Dahlan lives 1,300 miles from his Palestinian brethren in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. His spacious home here in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, features plush sofas, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers. The infinity pool in the back seems to spill into the glistening waterway beyond. >>>

In exclusive interview with Ma'an, Dahlan slams Palestinian Authority, Fatah - Discharged Fatah leader Muhammad Dahlan severely criticized the Palestinian Authority (PA) while dismissing the likelihood of a reconciliation with his former party, in an exclusive interview with Ma’an in Cairo.

Dahlan, who was Fatah’s leading figure in the Gaza Strip before 2007, was excluded from Fatah in 2011 over allegations of being involved in the death of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, and of engaging in high-level corruption.

Speaking to Ma’an, Dahlan severely criticized the Fatah-led PA, notably accusing the Palestinian government of financial mismanagement and corruption.

While discussing the fate of occupied East Jerusalem in light of the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, Dahlan said that the PA, which has a budget of $4.25 billion for 2016, "fails to allocate one tenth of that money to protect Jerusalem and help our people stay firm in Jerusalem."

The PA, he said, complains of insufficient funds while spending "hundreds of millions on building embassies all over the world, on travel, and on delegations." >>>

Israelis Raise Flag at Church of the Holy Sepulchre - IMEMC - "The Higher Presidential Committee of Church Affairs in Palestine asserted, in a press release, that this constitutes a clear violation of the sanctity of the holy site, which is added to the daily violations of Israeli occupation forces against the city of occupied Jerusalem." >>>

BDS and the shattering of liberal Zionist taboos - Jonathan Ofir - “We welcome the statement’s shattering of the taboo against boycotting Israeli entities that are complicit in—at least selective—violations of Palestinian human rights”, wrote Angela Y. Davis, Chandler Davis, Richard A. Falk, Rashid Khalidi, and Alice Rothchild, et al. in the New York Review of Books (November 10 issue).

Theirs was a response to an October 13th 2016 letter to the editor of the New York Review of Books, titled: “For an Economic Boycott and Political Nonrecognition of the Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Territories,” authored by Todd Gitlin, Peter Beinart, Kai Bird, Peter Brooks, Michael Walzer, and Edward Witten, et al.

The earlier article, whilst “shattering a taboo”, nonetheless opened with a negative qualification of the BDS movement, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions:

“We, the undersigned, oppose an economic, political, or cultural boycott of Israel itself as defined by its June 4, 1967, borders”.

After making that stance to ensure the liberal-Zionist stance of “Israel is not the problem, it’s the occupation and settlements that are”, the article nonetheless called for “a targeted boycott of all goods and services from all Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories, and any investments that promote the Occupation, until such time as a peace settlement is negotiated between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority”.

So the aim of this partial boycott is not very controversial; it is in the paradigm of the famous “peace process.” >>>

In Tel Rumeida, you can be arrested for laughing - Lori Rudolph - I returned to Tel Rumeida today to visit my friend and her mother. While waiting to get through the Shuhada street checkpoint, I ran into a colleague who works with Human Rights Defenders. I overheard a man who was standing next to us saying wahed, wahed, or “one by one.” As my colleague explained, changes have been made to the checkpoint. “It is now more difficult to pass through,” he said. The man who said wahed, wahed then told me, “The soldiers are allowing only one person at a time into the checkpoint today.” And so we patiently waited as the line grew longer.

The entrance to the checkpoint evoked the sounds, smells and images of a prison, with its turnstiles, surveillance cameras, bright lights, metal bars and the welded wire mesh. The small narrow passage through the checkpoint is guarded by armed Israeli soldiers. To exit from the checkpoint, one must pass through an x-ray machine which is located in a small room to the right of the passage. Soldiers are seated behind a glass window to watch the people pass through the machine and then exit the room (if they are granted permission to do so). When I exited and walked through the last turnstile, I immediately noticed how eerily empty and quiet Shuhada Street was. >>>

The war that cemented Israel’s place in the Middle East - Haggai Matar - The 1956 Sinai War was Israel’s first war as an established state, and followed eight years of hints at the possibility of peace. In the eyes of its Arab neighbors, the ’56 war aligned Israel with the former colonial powers, setting the stage for decades of hostility and war.

“The military attack on Egypt caused Israel unfathomable damage to its international status and security. The operation presented Israel to the entire world as an aggressor. It also presented Israel at the forefront of international colonialism in the Middle East.

The attack on Egypt blocked the road to peace with the Arab peoples with insurmountable stumbling blocks. Nobody now will conduct peace negotiations with Israel and no one will take seriously Israeli talk about readiness for peace.”

It has been exactly 60 years since Israel’s 1956 Sinai War. Its standing as the most forgotten and under-considered conflict in the Israeli public consciousness belies the fact that it is one of the most important developments in Israel’s relations with the Arab world. It was the first war following that which accompanied Israel’s founding in 1948, but its dramatic implications remain largely undiscussed. >>>

Imprisoned life: the feeling of a ‘closed military zone’ - al-Khalil team - International Solidarity Movement - "‘Closed military zone’ means ethnic cleansing of humans not spoken against, dehumanization not spoken against, the forcible transfer of humans not spoken against; even the idea of a human being behind the term of ‘Palestinian’ being denied, the existence of Palestinian human beings denied, their existence destroyed." >>>

Israel`s defense minister offers Palestinians big stick, tiny carrots - Akiva Eldar - "Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman`s "carrot-and-stick" plan promises Palestinians big punishments alongside negligible benefits, very much like the policies of the European colonial powers in Africa." >>>
