Es war für mich
heute hier in Gaza-Stadt ein Tag des Lachens und ein Tag
der Tränen. Noch eine Pressekonferenz, danach ein Besuch
im Krankenhaus, das am meisten von dem von Israels
Bomben und Raketen verursachten Blutbad gesehen hat.
Der Arzt berichtete von einigen Schwierigkeiten, mit
denen die Bevölkerung von Gaza zu tun. Dass 50 Kinder
gestorben seien, nur weil Israel sich weigerte, sie zu
einer Behandlung nach Israel zu lassen. Die von Israel
angegebenen Gründe: die Mütter seien unter 35 und
könnten Terroristen sein. Also starben die Kinder. Er
sagte auch, dass bis jetzt 242 Leute während der
Belagerung gestorben seien, weil Israel sich weigerte,
sie zu einer notwendigen Behandlung ( außerhalb von
Gaza) gehen zu lassen. Und dass es 300 Geburten an den
Kontrollpunkten gegeben hat mit der Folge dass 69 Babys
dabei gestorben seien.
Als Nächstes
besuchten wir einen Raum voll schrecklicher Photos von
verletzten, sterbenden und toten Kindern und Babys. Auf
dem Tisch lag eine Sammlung von Splittern und Teilen von
israelischer Artillerie – Raketen, Bomben, Geschossen
und Kugeln …
Dann besuchten wir
einige Patienten. Wir sahen keine Opfer dieser Gewalt
dort. Ein kleiner Junge, etwa 7 oder 8 Jahre alt, ist
sichtbar schwer krank. Er hielt die Hand seiner Mutter
und versuchte uns anzulächeln, als sie sagte, er wird
ohne Operation sterben, weil diese im Gazastreifen
nicht durchgeführt werden kann. Die Israelis lassen ihn
nicht nach Israel oder in die Westbank für eine
Behandlung.
Dann gingen wir in
die Station für Frühgeborene , wo ein Dutzend Babys in
notdürftig zusammengeflickten Brutkästen ums Überleben
kämpfen. Einige waren winzig, einige hatten Bandagen,
alle waren mit Atemgeräten verbunden. Ihre winzige Brust
hob und senkte sich, einige bewegten sich, öffneten ihre
Augen, schrieen. Sie schienen nicht krank zu sein, nur
sehr winzig. In einem amerikanischen Krankenhaus – da
bin ich mir sicher – würden alle überleben. Hier hängt
ihr Leben an einem seidenen Faden, weil es vom Strom
abhängig sind, der die Brutkästen weiterlaufen lässt.
Es sind nur kleine
Babys … jedes anders. Einige hell, einige etwas dunkler,
einige mit einem roten Gesicht, einige mit Haaren,
andere ohne. Es könnten arabische Babys sein oder
jüdische oder christliche oder muslimische. Es sind
palästinensische Babys und sie verdienen, gesund groß zu
werden. Ich frage mich, wie es sein kann, dass manche
Leute glauben, das Leben palästinensischer Babys sei
weniger wert als das anderer?
Wir gingen zur
Nieren-Dialyse-Station, wo 7 oder 8 Erwachsene ihre
Behandlung bekommen. Die Ärzte erzählten uns, dass die
Patienten oft stundenlang warten müssten, bis genug
Strom für die Apparate kommt. Israel genehmigt 12
Stunden pro Tag, manchmal aber nur 6. Sie haben also
immer Angst, dass die Maschine mitten in der Behandlung
stoppt, was auch immer wieder passiert. Sie berichten
auch, dass Israel nicht die notwendigen Ersatzteile für
die Apparate kommen lässt, ….
Und dann gab es ein
Essen mit Ministerpräsident Ismail Hanyeh in seinem Haus
im Flüchtlingslager. Er begrüßte jeden von uns und sagte
uns, wir seien nun Bürger Palästinas. Jedem hängte er
eine große Medaille um den Hals und sprach mit jedem
einzelnen ..Nach dem Essen führte er uns in einige der
winzigen Häusern, die oft nur aus einem Raum ohne Möbel
bestehen. Wir wurden herzlich von den Nachbarn des
Ministerpräsidenten und deren Kindern begrüßt.
Wie immer waren die
Leute und ihre Kinder sehr freundlich und hießen uns
willkommen, begrüßten uns lächelnd und reichten uns die
Hände. Viele der Frauen umarmten uns, berührten unsere
Gesichter und küssten uns und dankten uns für unser
Kommen. Überall waren Kinder, die durch die schmalen
Gassen rannten und uns zuwinkten und fragten „what is
your name?“ Ein paar versteckten sich hinter ihren
Müttern, weil sie zu schüchtern waren….
Danach gingen wir
zum großen Markt in der Altstadt von Gaza. Es gab so
viele Leute .. So ein kleiner Streifen Land für 1,5
Millionen Menschen. Überall winkten sie uns zu,
lächelten und machten mit ihren Fingern das
Friedenszeichen. ( Eigentlich ist es das Victory-, das
Siegeszeichen ) Ein flacher Wagen hielt neben unserm Bus
: auf ihm spielte eine Band extra für uns. Wir gingen
heute viel umher und sahen tausend lächelnde Gesichter.
Am Abend wurden wir
vom Ramattan-TV-Netzwerk unterhalten, von dem ein
Journalist mit auf unserm Boot FREE GAZA war. Sie
zeigten uns einen 6 minütigen Film, der während unsrer
Reise und bei unserer Ankunft gedreht worden war. Da gab
es viele Tränen, als wir unsere schwierige Reise noch
einmal erlebten, auf der viele von uns während der
Nacht seekrank geworden waren und beim Gedanken
ängstlich wurden, dass wir plötzlich von der
israelischen Flotte überfallen werden, die uns gewarnt
hatte, sie würde uns nicht nach Gaza einfahren lassen.
und dann die Freudenrufe und das Lachen, als wir die
unglaubliche Begrüßung sahen, während wir in den
Gazahafen segelten. Es müssen wenigstens 60 oder 70
Boote gewesen sein und mehr als hundert Leute kamen
schwimmend neben unsere Boote und manche kamen Bord.
Also, wir sind in
Gaza - und wir haben keinen einzigen Israeli mit einer
Waffe gesehen – nur drei unbewaffnete, die mit uns diese
besondere Reise machten.
Die letzte
Nachricht, die wir heute Abend noch von den Menschen aus
Gazastadt erhielten, war , dass sie einen Platz für uns
bauen wollen, den sie FREE GAZA-Platz nennen wollen. Und
alle unsere Namen sollten dort zu lesen sein …
Morgen um halb Fünf
werden einige von uns mit den Gazafischern in ihren
Booten zum Fischen mitfahren. Wir hoffen, dass unsere
Gegenwart diesen Männern und Jungen einigen Schutz
geben wird . Sie riskieren jedes Mal, wenn sie ihrem Job
vor der Küste Gazas nachgehen, von israelischen Waffen
verletzt oder getötet zu werden.

Ich sitze in einem
der sechs Fischerboote, die heute Morgen rausgefahren
sind. Es sind alte Boote aus Holz mit kleinen metallenen
Teilen im mechanischen Teil. Gedrehte Seile und
Fischnetze. Israel hat den Palästinensern seit 15
Monaten das Fischen in ihren eigenen Gewässern
verboten. Auch vorher schon hat man sie auf ca. 6 Meilen
von der Küste beschränkt. Sie schießen Löcher in die
Boote und beschießen sogar die Fischer, wenn sie 1 km
hinausfahren.
Heute gehen 19 von
uns mit, um eine andere Art von Belagerung zu brechen.
Die Verweigerung des Rechtes zu fischen, etwas, was in
jedem Land, das ans Mittelmeer grenzt selbstverständlich
ist. Nur den Palästinensern wird gesagt, sie können
nicht ihren Lebensunterhalt mit Fischen erwerben, sie
dürfen nicht für ihre Familien sorgen, sie dürfen nichts
zu der Wirtschaft ihres Landes beitragen. Wir hatten
uns dafür entschieden, als wir nach Gaza segelten. (
Einer der Fischer sagte uns, wir seien die ersten
ausländischen Boote seit 35 Jahren. Sie seien so
gezwungen, alles aus Israel zu sehr hohem Preis zu
kaufen, sogar den Fisch aus dem eigenen Gewässer)
Zwanzig von uns kamen um halb fünf
am Hafen an – noch sehr schläfrig und herumstolpernd um
das Dutzend von Sicherheitsleuten, die uns beschützten.
Man sagte uns, wir müssten warten, weil die Fischer
Angst hätten, mit uns aufs Meer hinaus zu fahren, weil
sie eine Beschießung von Seiten der Israelis
befürchteten . Schließlich kamen vier Stunden später
sechs Boote und wir gingen an Bord, 2-3 je Boot. Der
Hafen ist klein aber völlig passend für diese Boote plus
unsern eigenen zwei. Ein Reporter kam in einem der Boote
mit.
Alle Palästinenser sagten, sie
wollten über die sechs Meilen Grenze hinausfahren. Sie
waren genau so neugierig wie wir und wollten die
Schlinge testen, die mit der Restriktion um ihren Hals
gelegt wurde. Nach 8 Meilen tauchten drei israelische
Patrouillenboote auf und brummten vor uns hin und her.
In jedem Boot stand ein Soldat mit Gewehr. Das Boot, in
dem ich saß, gehörte sechs Cousins, der Jüngste war 15.
Als die Patrouillenboote auftauchten, waren sie
natürlich sehr nervös. Ich bin mir sicher, dass die
Israelis zunächst nicht recht wussten, was sie mit uns
tun sollten – ließen uns dann aber allein. Ich bin
sicher, dass ihre Medien jetzt sagen werden, sie hätten
uns begleitet, aber das würde eine Lüge sein.
Sechs Stunden später hatten die
Männer so viel in ihren Netzen, was sie in vier Jahren
nicht gefangen hatten. Sie waren begeistert. Ich
beobachtete, wie sie die Tonnen von Fisch hochzogen und
zum Backbord schleppten, sie sortierten, wässerten und
zogen die größten Garenelen heraus, um sie für mich und
meinem Freund Moussa zu kochen. Unterdessen – nach 12
Stunden - waren wir zurück in den Hafen gefahren. Meine
Haut war von der Sonne gerötet.
Die Fischer waren überglücklich
über ihren Fang. Sie hatten für 16 Familien für einen
Monat lang vorgesorgt.
„Wollt Ihr morgen wieder zum
Fischen mitkommen?“ - Natürlich nicht. Sie hatten
Israels schreckliche Belagerung herausgefordert und
heute hatten sie gewonnen. Aber ohne uns werden die
Israelis morgen wieder kommen …
Wir können nur hoffen, dass diese
Männer in der Lage sein werden bald wieder hinaus zu
fahren, und zu tun, was Generationen von Männern getan
haben – auf Fischfang zu gehen.

(GAZA CITY, 26 August 2008) – The SS
Free Gaza and SS Liberty will leave Gaza for Cyprus on
Thursday morning at 9:00 am. Several Palestinian
students who have been denied exit visas by Israel will
travel to Cyprus on the boats. One Palestinian professor
will finally be able to go back to teaching in Europe
and one young, Palestinian woman will finally be
reunited with her husband. Several of the Free Gaza
international human rights workers will remain in Gaza
to do human rights monitoring.
By freely traveling to Gaza, on
Saturday, August 23rd, in two, small, wooden boats, the
Free Gaza Movement forced the Israeli government to
issue a fundamental policy change regarding their
military and economic blockade of Gaza. Until now,
Israel has wanted absolute control of Gaza with no
responsibility. Israel has managed to maintain this
situation, in spite of international law, because its
policies have never been challenged.
When the SS Free Gaza and SS Liberty
approached the waters of Gaza, the Israeli government
had to decide whether it wanted to publicly acknowledge
that Israel remains an occupying power in Gaza, in which
case Israel would be responsible under international law
for its actions, including war crimes. In the face of
intense, public scrutiny, Israel instead chose to
acknowledge the inherant right of Palestinians to freely
engage with the world. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign
affairs publicly announced that humanitarian and human
rights missions to Gaza will no longer be stopped or
threatened by Israel. With the end of the Israeli siege
of Gaza, Palestinians are free to exercise their rights
without fear of being stopped or killed by the Israeli
military.
Since the organizers of the Free Gaza
Movement will not be entering Israeli terrritorial
waters, and since they will request an inspection from
the Gaza Port Authority, they expect no interference on
the part of the Israeli authorities when they leave
Gaza. By Israel’s own admission, it has no authority to
inspect the boats or the passengers when they leave
Gaza.
With the collapse of the Israeli
blockade, the Free Gaza Movement will quickly return to
Gaza with another delegation, and invites the United
Nations, Arab League and international community to
organize similar human rights and humanitarian efforts.
The Free Gaza Movement will continue to work to ensure
the free passage between Gaza and the outside world will
remain safe and open.

Sie wurden, auf Anweisung des israelischen Verteidigungsministers nicht an der Anlandung gehindert. Vor die Wahl internationalen Aufsehens und ungünstiger Medienreaktionen oder der momentanen Zurückstellung der Blockade-Politik Gazas gestellt, hat das Verteidigungsministerium Israels den zweiten Weg gewählt, sicher eine gute Wendung.

Wenn die Boote in Gaza ankommen - Stuart Littlewood – Ist die Palästinensische Behörde für oder gegen die Belagerung? Während andere Solidarität mit den tapferen „Freiheit“-Reisenden zeigen und Segel setzen, um die Belagerung des Gazastreifens zu brechen, hört man nichts von der PA?
Die Belagerung läuft nun schon länger als 2 Jahre, aber hier in Großbritannien hörte ich nur einmal davon, dass die palästinensische Behörde von Ungerechtigkeit, Leiden und Verwüstung sprach. Soweit ich weiß, haben diese „offiziellen“ Vertreter des palästinensischen Volkes über die Medien nichts über die „BefreitGaza!-Boote“ gesagt, die die seit langer Zeit größte potentielle Herausforderung für die israelische Besatzung darstellen.

nicht? Free-Gaza-Boote in Kürze unterwegs -
Anis Hamadeh - Vor mehr als zwei Jahren wurden alle
Grenzübergänge in den Gazastreifen von der israelischen
Armee geschlossen. Seitdem leben die 1,5 Millionen
Einwohner in einem Belagerungszustand, der im
vergangenen Juni verschärft wurde. Israel begründet die
Belagerung mit Qassam-Raketenbeschuss aus der Region und
der angeblichen Absicht der Hamas-Regierung, Israel zu
vernichten. Gleichzeitig betonen israelische
Regierungsmitglieder, dass die Besatzung des
Gazastreifens mit dem Rückzug der israelischen Siedler
und der Armee im September 2005 beendet sei und der
Gazastreifen nun als Ausland betrachtet würde. Die
Tatsachen vor Ort sprechen eine andere Sprache. >>>
Organisation -
ist sehr schwierig zu beschreiben. Es
liegt keine Organisation vor in einem strukturell klaren
Sinne wie wir sie erwarten würden. Freegaza ist eine
gewachsene Gemeinschaft, bestehend aus Menschen
verschiedener Herkunft und verschiedener Erfahrungen.
Einige bringen organisatorisches Talent mit, aber im
wesentlichen fehlt eine professionelle
Logistikabteilung. Spendengelder reichen kaum für die
beiden Schiffe, an ein Sekretariat ist da natürlich
nicht zu denken. Ein relativer newcomer wie ich entnimmt
alle Beschlüsse den e-mail-Kontakten, die in loser Form
in einem Handbuch und seit kurzem auch in einem nur für
Teilnehmer zugänglichen Forum gesammelt sind.
Es gibt einen Gründerstamm in Kalifornien um die beiden
Initiatoren Greta Berlin und Paul Laraudee, der auch
persönliche Kontakte pflegte. Daraus hat sich die
sogenannte „steering group“ gebildet. Alle weiteren
Teilnehmer ordneten sich im Verlauf der letzten Monate
anderen Arbeitsgruppen zu: der Mediengruppe, der legal
group, der ship logistic group, people coordinating
group (Sicherheitstraining, Mediation, Arbeitsgruppen),
und ganz wichtig „Land team.“ Land team besteht aus
Leuten, die in Cypern bleiben, zu uns und der Außenwelt
Kontakt halten.
Die Mediengruppe ist ausgestattet mit 5
Satellitentelephone, verschiedenen Laptops mit freiem
Internetzugang, Filmkameras. Filmexperten: Bill Dienst
(>biography), photjournalism; Daisy X, documentary film
productioner.
Teilnehmer: die TN-liste für
die Öffentlichkeit ist noch nicht freigegeben.
Mit an Bord wird
ein Journalist des „Independent“ sein. Auf meiner
provisorischen befinden sich 50 Teilnehmer, aber es
scheinen noch welche hinzuzukommen. Alter: zwischen 22
und 84
Herkunftsländer:
Palästina, Israel, USA, UK, Irland, Deutschland,
Pakistan, Tunesien, Griechenland, Australien, Zypern,
Libanon, Dänemark, Italien, Kanada, Frankreich.
Erfahrungen: fast alle sind Friedensaktivisten,
verschiedentlich organisiert, auch individuell.
Nicht wenige haben Einreiseverweigerung nach Israel;
einige haben auch Hafterfahrungen nach Teilnahme an
friedlichen Demonstrationen oder Besuchen von
Menschenrechtssymposien in der Westbank oder Besuchen in
Flüchtlingslagern.

Benötigtem. Wir bringen einige Medikamente, 120
Hörgeräte (dazu vielleicht eine eigene Geschichte von
mir später), gespendete Kinderbälle, ein paar
Musikinstrumente (von „Abrahams Töchter“)
Geplante
Rückkehr: unterschiedlich, einige werden länger in Gaza
bleiben. Für die meisten ist an eine Rückkehr nach 3
Tagen Aufenthalt gedacht.

Sailing to Gaza
In August, unarmed Palestinians,
Israelis and internationals will sail directly to Gaza
without going through Israeli territory and without
seeking permission from Israeli authorities. They
include an 81-year-old Catholic nun, an 83-year-old
Holocaust survivor, Palestinians from Gaza, 16
nationalities, at least four major religions and the
international press. On Tuesday, July 29, 2008, the Free
Gaza Movement publicly introduces its international team
along with the Greek vessels that will take volunteers
from Cyprus to Gaza in popular solidarity with
Palestinian human rights. From that day, any attempt to
damage the project will be considered an act of
aggression against a nonviolent international human
rights mission. The boats will stop at Greek ports to
receive supporters and there will be opportunities for
the press and public figures to travel part of the way
on board and to broadcast from aboard ship with the
latest high-speed satellite data systems

Die „Free Gaza“-Bewegung,
eine Gruppe internationaler Friedensaktivisten, die
entschlossen ist, im August nach Gaza zu segeln, sieht
in der zwischen Hamas und Israel beschlossenen
Waffenruhe vom 19. Juni eine Verbesserung ihrer Chancen,
Einlass zu erhalten.
„Jetzt ist es noch
unwahrscheinlicher, dass Israel uns an der Ausführung
unseres Plans hindert“, meint Greta Berlin, eine der
Organisatoren. „Allerdings hatten wir auch niemals vor,
durch israelisches Gebiet zu fahren. Daher sollten uns
auch ohne Abkommen auf Waffenruhe keine Schwierigkeiten
erwarten, um nach Gaza zu gelangen, - zumal wir
gewaltfreie Zivilisten sind, aus aller Welt
zusammengekommen mit dem Wunsch, die Seegrenze nach Gaza
öffnen zu helfen.“
Mehr als 45 Teilnehmer aus
15 Ländern werden sich in Zypern für die „Jungfernfahrt“
am 5. August versammeln, und man hofft, dass sie weitere
Fährdienste zwischen Gaza und Larnaca zur Folge haben
wird. Unter den Passagieren sind Geistliche,
Professoren, Anwälte, Doktoren, Ingenieure und
Menschenrechtsbeobachter. Einige Passagiere lebten einst
in Gaza und haben ihre Familien seit Jahren nicht mehr
gesehen, weil Israel ihnen die Einreise, oder den
Angehörigen die Ausreise, verweigerte.
„Meine Eltern flohen 1948
aus Palästina, als ich drei Jahre alt war“, berichtet
Naim Franjieh, ein Überlebender der Palästinensischen
Naqba (Katastrophe). 700.000 Palästinenser wurden
während der Entstehungszeit des Staates Israel
gezwungen, ihre Häuser zu verlassen. „Ich möchte mit auf
dem Boot sein, um den Menschen von Gaza zu sagen, dass
sie von uns, die wir Palästina verlassen haben, nicht
vergessen wurden.“
Das Projekt wird vom
„Carter Center“ und von Desmond Tutu unterstützt, sowie
von mehr als 70 weiteren Organisationen und
Einzelpersonen.
„Was für eine Gelegenheit
für eine Wende zum Guten, sowohl für Palästinenser, als
auch für Israelis. Wir haben vor, den geschlossenen
Hafen zu passieren, mit den Fischern auf Fischfang zu
gehen, in den Krankenhäusern zu helfen und in den
Schulen zu arbeiten. Unsere Absicht ist aber auch, die
Welt daran zu erinnern, dass wir nicht tatenlos zusehen
werden, wie 1,5 Millionen Menschen durch Hunger und
Krankheit den Tod erleiden“, fügte Hedy Epstein, selber
eine Überlebende des Holocaust, hinzu.
Auf die Frage, warum er
meine, dass Israel den Booten die Durchfahrt erlauben
würde, antwortete Paul Larudee, Mitorganisator,
„Das ist keine Frage der
Erlaubnis. Wir handeln lediglich im Sinne des Rechts der
Palästinenser, zu bestimmen, wer ihr Gebiet betreten und

Haniyeh on Saturday welcomed two boats that sailed from
Cyprus to the Gaza Strip in efforts to break the
Israeli-imposed blockade on the Palestinian territory,
saying that the arrival of the boats signaled the end of
the siege.
Die beiden Schiffe "Liberty" und "Free Gaza" sind im Hafen von Gaza angelandet. Sie wurden, auf Anweisung des israelischen Verteidigungsministers nicht an der Anlandung gehindert. As indeed the media boat, now back in harbour. Estimated time of arrival according to Jeff Halper, with whom I finally managed to speak on a satellite phone whose number wasn’t published and is now used in emergency, is 5 pm – 7 pm. Palestinians in Gaza said earlier there was NO ISRAELI NAVAL PRESENCE on the horizon, but the U-turn was apparently due to warning shots having indeed been fired. >>>

I received a phone call from Gaza: it’s obvious there’s a demonstration
there, with extreme excitement. It gave one
goosebumps, feeling freedom beginning to flow.
The media boat was not far from the FREE GAZA
and LIBERTY, but relayed co-ordinates (they
couldn’t make contact with each other) show that
for the FREE GAZA and LIBERTY to have met the
press, the two boats would have had to turn
round: inadvisable, if they’re to make land in
daylight.
If the radio had been working. If the satellite
phones were unjammed. These are regrets, but
the fact is that the boats are now about to turn
into Gazan waters, and may God speed them safe
to land.
Please alert your correspondents in Gaza to
cover the arrival… insha’allah it
will take place. How they then get out? --
Chapter Two of this ongoing saga. Online
talkbacks wish them to stay in Gaza and
join the freedom fight, where they belong! The
online words far more explicit.. as is the hate
mail. (And so the oppressor is oppressed.) But
maybe today freedom and justice will warm a few
Palestinian hearts. The Free Gaza Movement will
be in great danger of too many cups of tea. And
of being swamped by the 200,000 people whom,
we’re told, will be on the beach to welcome
them. And the Israeli Government must now be on
warning that yes, indeed, the World cares. That
civil society has a voice. And that voice is
saying NO. Human beings have sacred rights, and
people are ready to defend them, wherever they
may be. Even in the prison that is Gaza.

One Step Closer: Getting Ready to Sail to
Gaza

1, 2008 - Greetings from Cyprus! Our
official training begins today, as we move
one step closer to breaking the siege of
Gaza. What may have seemed at one point a
distant and somewhat exotic dream has become
a solid reality. In just a few days we will
begin sailing the SS Free Gaza and the SS
Liberty across the Mediterranean to Occupied
Palestine. And though there are still
challenges ahead – things are falling into
place, and there are some truly amazing
people here making this happen. Among our
group is Monir Deeb, a husband, father,
businessman, and human rights activist from
Los Angeles, California. Though he is also
an American, Monir was born in Gaza City. As
a Palestinian he is putting himself at great
risk by sailing with us. We’re thankful for
his bravery. His enthusiasm and wisdom have
become invaluable to this project.
Among our group is Hedy Epstein, a human
rights activist from St. Louis, Missouri,
and a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust. Her
sunny smile and gentle demeanor are a source
of constant strength to us all. When she was

An den Botschafter der BRD in Zypern,
sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Kindervater,
wie Ihnen bekannt ist, werde ich in Kürze mit einer
Gruppe internationaler Friedensaktivisten nach Gaza
segeln. Ich möchte Ihnen vor meiner Abreise vier Fragen
stellen und um eine schriftliche Antwort bitten.
1. Gibt meine Regierung, die Regierung der BRD, mir bei
diesem friedlichen Unternehmen Unterstützung?
Es ist bekannt, dass die Marine Israels den 30
Meilen-Streifen Gazas kontrolliert, im Gegensatz zu
Israels Behauptung, dass der Gazastreifen nicht mehr
besetzt sei.
2. Sieht meine Regierung Gaza als "immer noch besetzt"
an im Sinne des Internationalen Rechts?
Wir haben vernommen, dass unsere Reise von der
Israelischen Marine unterbrochen werden soll, unsere
Boote geentert und zu einem israelischen Hafen
geschleppt werden sollen.
3. Wuerde meine Regierung diesen Vorgang als eine
rechtsmäßige Handlung ansehen in Anbetracht der
Tatsache, dass wir aus internationalen Gewässern heraus
in die 12-Meilen-Zone palästinensischen Gewässers zu
segeln beabsichtigen?
4. Angenommen, dass wir den alten Hafen ohne Vorfälle
erreichen, was durchaus wahrscheinlich ist,
würde meine Regierung mich in vollem |Umfang
unterstützen, wenn wir Gaza wieder verlassen wollen (ein
gültiger Pass wird selbstverständlich mitgeführt).

mit internationalen Friedensaktivisten aus den
Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada und Europa,von Larnaka/Zypern
nach Gaza aufbrechen um die Isolierung der
Bevölkerung Gazas zu unterbrechen. Israel behauptet,
sich aus dem Gaza-Streifen zurückgezogen und damit
die Besatzung beendet zu haben. Trotzdem schnürt
Israel die Bevölkerung, die ganze Bevölkerung des
Gaza-Streifens ab: von Land, aus der Luft und von
See.
Ich möchte
darauf hinweisen, dass es sich bei dieser
friedfertigen Aktion keineswegs um eine Provokation
handelt. Vielmehr dient die Aktion FREE-GAZA dem
Wunsch, als humanitäre Aktion dem Völkerrecht und
dem humanitären Menschenrecht eine sichtbare Lanze
zu brechen. Was Regierungen nicht können - oder
nicht zu können glauben - soll so von friedfertigen
Bürgern aus vielen Teilen der Welt, darunter
zahlreichen Juden,* in die Tat umgesetzt werden.
Eine der
jüdischen Teilnehmerinnen aus Deutschland, Frau Dr.
Edith Lutz, leitete mir soeben einen Brief an den
Deutschen Botschafter in Zypern, Herrn Dr.
Kindervater weiter mit 4 Fragen, die unbedingt einer
Beantwortung, nicht nur seitens des Botschafters,
sondern seines obersten Dienstherren, also Ihnen,
bedürfen.
Ich bitte Sie, der Dringlichkeit halber, trotz der
Urlaubszeit, um rasche Beantwortung, da sowohl die
Sicherheit deutscher Staatsbürger als auch die
Durchsetzung des von der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
anerkannten Völkerrechtes von Ihrer Antwort berührt
wird.

internationals will sail directly from international
waters into Gaza. We say: Enough already! I will be
aboard as the ship's doctor. The Free Gaza Movement
vessels will challenge Israel's policy of imprisoning
over 1.4 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, while
saying they are free. Dr. Bill Dienst comments.

I read
your article in today's Haaretz with much interest and
would just make a few comments thereon.
Is
Israel worried about the siege of Gaza being broken?
This siege has shocked thousands of people, including
many Jews, and certainly tainted whatever is left of
Israel's reputation. Is Israel worried about damage to its
public relations? Why is there no worry about the lack
of morality in causing death and destruction to a
civilian population of 1,500,000, half of which are
children and young people? About the loss of morality
and the fact that the State of Israel has no feelings
for fellow human beings it occupies who live a few miles
away from its borders? About the fact that it has raised
its own population in an atmosphere of hatred, racism and
fear?
Finally,
the term "left wing activists" is poorly chosen because
the "Free Gaza" nonviolent peace activists have a wide
range of backgrounds and professions.
In
actual fact, there is no longer a "left" nor a "right";
luckily, however, there are still those from many walks
of life who will dare to risk much for their fellow
human beings and we should pay them great honour. The
"Free Gaza" activists belong to this special species of
women and men. In conclusion, Israel should finally
realize that a deathly siege is only bringing dishonour
to it, nothing else, and certainly not peace.

After reading the article by ,Mr. Yaakov Katz,in the
Jerusalem Post, I would like to make some
clarification and hope that some of the Israeli
press will publish it to let the Israeli readers
have the chance to see the facts on the ground and
deiced for themselves. the Free Gaza movement are
individuals from all walks of life with proven
history of standing for: PEACE, JUSTICE, NON
VIOLENCE RESISTANCE and HUMANITY.
Unfortunately,there are people who would translate
all acts, as an intend to aggression. Here this is
not the case.
The
FREE GAZA group, are investing their time, money, and
safety, to speak out against INJUSTICE ! They are the
same people who stood by the Jewish population of the
World at the hard times of Natzi persecution. Why did
Israel, and the World Jewry appraise them then, and
awarded them high honors, Yet now, they and their
supporters are being accused, and almost condemned of
being facilitators to arms smuggling to Hamas ??!! They
are NOT the enemy of Israel and the Jewish people. They
are the enemy of PERSECUTION, COLLECTIVE
PUNISHMENT,RACISM<and ANTI- SIMITISM.
They are the enemy of STARVATION OF INNOCENT CHILDREN,

Dear Mr.
Horovitz,
I was quite
shocked upon reading Yaakov Katz’ report in the online
edition of 25 July. An article containing such serious
errors should not have appeared in The Jerusalem Post.
The “Free Gaza
Movement” is not directed by members of ISM and ICAHD.
As a member of the group I should like to correct this
statement. The organiser is the “Free Gaza” group,
which is made up of international peace activists. We
come from different backgrounds, have different
positions and opinions, but we are united in a single
wish: to help the suffering people of the Gaza Strip.
As a Jew I
feel obliged to follow the main principle of Judaism:
“Solidarity with the suffering”, based on WaJikrah
(Lev.19, 18), “we-ahavta l-reacha kamocha”.
To stamp us as
“lefties” is incorrect (nor is this term correspond with
the niveau and pretensions of the Jerusalem Post).
Although my heart beats on the left my life’s dedication
is to justice, which is found neither on the right or
the left. I am inspired by the “Ethics of the Fathers”
and the prophets. And I follow the philosophy of Martin
Buber, an early Zionist who strove (unfortunately, in
vain) for justice and peace with the Arab population.
I am very
offended that our peaceful action has been reported on,
cunningly (?), with the fear of many people that Iran
might send weaponry to Gaza. „The IDF spokesman would
not say“, the report continues, „ what the navy intends
to do“ when we enter Gazan waters. I would have a
suggestion: Let peaceful words speak instead of words
of might. One word would be sufficient: Shalom.

new level, two boats packed with foreign left-wing
activists will attempt to sail from Cyprus to the sealed
Gaza harbor in two weeks' time.

The operation is being directed
by members of the International Solidarity Movement and
the Israeli Commission against House Demolitions. A Web
site, FreeGaza, has been set up to collect donations and
update the public.
The group - which numbers some 40 activists - has
purchased two boats, one called SS Free Gaza and
the other SS Liberty, named after the USS
Liberty that was mistakenly bombed by the Israel Air
Force during the Six Day War. Thirty-four American
sailors were killed in the bombing.
The boats are scheduled to set sail from Cyprus
on August 5 and arrive, according to organizer Angela
Godfrey-Goldstein, at the Gaza coast a day or two later.
"The purpose is to get into the Gaza harbor and
breach the siege," Godfrey-Goldstein said Thursday. "The
IDF will probably stop us but part of the point is to
show that Gaza is closed off."
She said that if the boats were stopped by the
Israel Navy, they would likely remain at sea for a few
days in an effort to get the government to change its
policy and allow free access to Gaza by sea.
Such access is not allowed and the waters off the
coast are patrolled by the navy, mainly due to
weapons-smuggling from Egypt and other countries.
In April, The Jerusalem Post reported that
Iran was increasing its efforts to smuggle arms into the
Strip by dropping floating devices off the Gaza coast
that are then picked up by Gazan fisherman.
According to defense officials, Iran was sending
rockets and other advanced weaponry to Hamas and Islamic
Jihad in the Gaza Strip via tunnels dug under the
Philadelphi Corridor from Sinai as well as by sea.
Officials said the navy was doing an effective job in
curbing the smuggling by sea but that there were
shipments that Israeli forces had not succeeded in
intercepting.
The IDF Spokesman's Office would not say what the
navy intends to do in the event that the protest boats
try to enter the Gaza harbor.
David and Sue adopted
two children and fostered fourteen, from newborns to
16-year-olds, including three pairs of siblings. His
love for children is one of the forces that drives him.
He often says:
"We have three beautiful
grandchildren - girls. I look at their lustrous skin and
hair and into their happy blue eyes. In those eyes I see
the two billions of our world's children. They are all
equally precious. Not one should be harmed."
He is passionate about
the plight of the Palestinian people and was vehemently
opposed to the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2002
David wanted to help the Palestinians, when a brilliant
idea occurred to him. He would buy or charter a boat,
fill it with food and medical supplies, and sail to
Palestine. The voyage of The Dove and the Dolphin in the
Danish MV Barbara started from Haldon Quay, Torquay on
1st February 2003 and finished the 3,100 sea miles to
Gaza sixteen days later. The £70,000 cost of the mercy
ship mission was paid by the Halpins and over £20,000 of
donations from the public paid for the food. The voyage
was a success, the Palestinians received the aid David
Halpin supplied, and the publicity raised international
consciousness of the Palestinian plight. He has visited
Palestine six times since the voyage.
He also entered the
public arena, with a group of other doctors, to seek a
proper investigation of Dr David Kelly’s death. He says
it is impossible that Dr Kelly died of haemorrhage from
one small wrist artery, which is the first official
cause of death. Furthermore, he considers it
preposterous that this top scientist who knew all about
the biology of death would have chosen a blunt pruning
knife and co-proxamol tablets for his suicide. David
Halpin was the first to publish these questions. His

These courageous,
passionate, committed people detail their upcoming
voyage, the thought, preparation, and purpose of their
journey. Aside from David Halpin, who will be part of
the support team in Cyprus, and won't actually be on the
sailing vessels, they are dramatically risking their
lives to accomplish four things-
1) Open access to Gaza
(right now the people of Gaza are cut off from vital
medical supplies, international aid, basic supplies,
people)
2) Demonstrate physically that Israel is blockading Gaza
when they do not have a right to do so- and deny that
that is what they are doing. 3) Show solidarity with the
Palestinian people. 4) Demonstrate the power of
non-violent direct action.
They merit support,
assistance and encouragement from the world, and
certainly help in breaking the information barricade.

Dear Mr. Ravid:
Even the title of your column is designed to make
everyone in Israel fearful of nonviolent human rights
workers. Why is that?. Forty of us are sailing to Gaza,
and we will break Israel's terrible siege of 1.5 million
Palestinians. Why are you all scurrying around worrying
about peaceful people who want to bring to the attention
of the world what Israel is doing? Are you embarrassed?
Are you ashamed? Do you think we don't know?
Why doesn't Israel just let us in and stop fussing?
Israel says it no longer occupies Gaza. Why the outcry
then, the wringing of your hands, the terminology that
is so off-base, when we have every right to come and
visit at the invitation of the NGOs in Gaza.
Almost all of us on board have already been to the
occupied territories. We have seen what Israel does to
an occupied people. We have been wounded, tear-gassed
and beaten. Yet we still come back to bring to the
attention of the world that Israel is an occupying
entity that does much worse to the Palestinians than
you've done to any of us.
Wake up, Mr. Ravid. The world is catching on to what
Israel does with American money and American government
acquiescence. We are not going away. If we don't succeed,
there will be others who will also try to break this
siege.
